Legislation recently introduced in the House would abolish several large federal agencies if passed. Introduced by Congressman Bradley Byrne (R-AL), the Sunset Inefficient and Unaccountable Government Act(H.R. 7334) would abolish the agencies, “unless a Federal law disapproving of the abolishment of the agency is enacted…”
The agencies up for elimination are the Departments of:
- Agriculture
- Commerce
- Education
- Energy
- Health and Human Services
- Housing and Urban Development
- Labor
- Interior
- Veterans Affairs
- Transportation, and any office in the Department of the Treasury.
The bill explicitly spares the Departments of Defense, State, Homeland Security, Justice, and Treasury.
The abolishment time frames range from 2-11 years from the date of enacting the bill into law.
The bill states, “When an agency is abolished under this Act, the head of such agency may take such actions as are necessary to dispose of the assets, obligations, and liabilities of the agency during the one-year period that begins on the date of such abolishment.”
While this bill seems scary, its highly unlikely a bill like this will pass in Congress. Attempts have been made in the past to eliminate federal agencies but have not gained traction.
